Your closet CAN work for you...

I’m delighted to welcome my friend Rachel Strisik to the Wardrobe Workshop. I first met Rachel when she was working with Stacy London on the rollout of Style for Hire, and I was a participant in the first-ever Style for Hire training. We went our separate ways and reconnected last year through a fabulous DC networking group called Her Corner. She’s a stylish, warm person who can take charge of pretty much anything. Here she shares her wisdom about closets, one of my favorite topics.

Not all closets in the world are created equally and I don’t know about you but I have dreams about my “some-day” closet. It is big, totally organized and absolutely gorgeous in its design. However, until I get that ideal closet, I am

working with the closet I have and I am doing the best that I can to maximize it’s efficiency so that I am able to enjoy getting dressed in the morning, put away my laundry and honestly, just see the clothing that I do love to wear. Are you (more…)

Mint green skirt three ways...

Mint green skirt three ways

A really successful shopping trip last week netted my Lovely Client a cute mint-green jacquard skirt from Anthro. She was skeptical about it at first but then loved how it fit. Then I kept finding new ways to style it with stuff that was right in the dressing room with us. Sold!
Do you have a seemingly unversatile piece that could be worn in more ways than you thought?

Seven for summer...

Seven for Summer

Summer is here!

No, not officially, but today in DC it will be 90 degrees.

So how can you keep your look stylish and fresh when the mercury soars? With a mix of the practical and the fun and frivolous.

Here’s how: To keep yourself protected from the heat, drink lots of water, protect your eyes from the sun, and don’t forget the sunscreen. A purse-size folding fan will help make the heat feel manageable. You’ll also want to lighten up your bag (forget the heavy leather bag for warmer weather, although you may want or need something more streamlined in more professional settings). A pretty scarf will add color and a little warmth in temperature-controlled settings, and a lightweight statement necklace can upgrade even your most simple warm-weather basics.

And I firmly believe that a quick swipe of lipsticks solves nearly all problems — weather related and otherwise.

In the spotlight? Keep it simple...

If you’re going to testify before Congress or be in the spotlight in any other mode, the main thing to remember is to keep your look very simple.

I am definitely not going to weigh in on the IRS controversy, but on sartorial grounds, Lois Lerner is a lesson in what not to do. First, the tank/shell doesn’t work with the gray — the tank is a warm turquoise and it is jarring with the muted cool gray. Second and more important, the necklace and bracelet are a big distraction. This is even more obvious in video.

She would have done better with a higher neckline in some other color, and either no necklace or maybe an antiqued silver in a length that worked better with the shell’s neckline.

If you have a headshot photo session or media appearance, take some time to plan your outfit carefully and photograph yourself in it so you see what you look like. Get a second opinion. Wear the outfit around your house. And of course, consider bringing in a professional to guide and support you at such an important time.

Clutches this summer...

It’s so easy just to wear the same bulky huge bag around day in and day out and then just give in to laziness and temptation and carry that bag in the evening, too. (I should know!) But try lightening your load once in a while. You’ll get an instant style boost (and save a little strain on your shoulders and back to boot).
During the day, tuck essentials in the cute bag and use it to run to the ladies’ room or out for a bite to eat.
My only problem is deciding which one. Which one is your favorite?
